Active learning

Hello.....
One principle of the CCCM is to engage students in active learning.
How can you implement this in teaching?

  1. Rather than passively listening to the teacher, students are actively engaged in constructing knowledge through exploration, reflection, and interaction with others.

  2. Active learning is learning by doing and it builds intrinsic motivation and self-confidence on students.

  3. In fact Active learning is all about activities that recguire from the students to do something besides listening to the teacher in order to help them learn and apply what they have studied of the course materials.

    Collaborative learning

To make the students engage in active learning the teacher can ask the students interact with each other by giving them group work in which they should worke together to finish the task.

  4. You are right Ibrahim. Another way to implement this principle is to allow students to choose what they want to learn and then teach them that. I don't mean here that we give the students full freedom of what they want to study but I mean that it will be a good idea to give them some. This way, they will be more enthusiastic to learn the lesson and their participation will increase.

  5. First of all, we should discuss why is it important to engage students in active learning? have a look at these quotes.
The Chinese philosopher Confucius (400 BC)said:
    What I hear, I forget.
    What I see, I remember.
    What I do, I understand.
This quote is an example of how learning by doing is important.

    Silberman (1996)said:
    What I hear, I forget.
What I hear and see, I remember a little.
What I hear, see, and ask questions about or discuss with someone else, I begin to understand.
What I hear, see, discuss and do, I acquire knowledge and skill.
What I teach to another, I master.
This quote shows how interaction, discussion, and doing is important in learning so that we don't just forget what we learn.

Now we come to HOW can we engage students in active learning? There are many ways that we can use to attract students' attention and engage them in active learning. For instance:
    - Let them discuss the issue with their partners.
    - Try to make them state the information in their own words.
    - Give examples related to the topic and try to make the lesson as interesting as possible.
    - Let them think of ideas which interact with the idea you are discussing.
    - always encourage them to ask if they have any question regarding the lesson or the discussed ideas.
    - Encourage them to participate even if they are not sure of their answers and never embarrass them when they give wrong answers.
These are some tips, I hope you find it useful.

  6. One of the ways that simply can engage the student to participate and being active is asking the students to present topics that are relative to the curriculum or give oral speech about any thing in the lessosM the main purpose of this is breaking the silence and the isolation of the student.
