A Student-Focused Approach to Education

Child-centered education allows young students to initiate their own learning. It focuses on the whole child and emphasizes both cognitive and emotional development. Child-centered learning is founded on the principals of key child psychologists and educational researchers including John Dewey, Jean Piaget, and Lev Vygotsky.

Children Initiate Their Learning

In a child-centered classroom, children initiate their own learning by choosing activities that interest them. They work in a more independent way to discover their potential in unique ways. Additionally, child-centered learning allows students to work in ways that complement their various learning styles. As Howard Gardner proved through his research, children learn in many different ways and no one method is suited for all students in a classroom.

Learning Through Play

Naturally, a child-centered classroom will include a lot of learning through play. For this reason, it is more common to see this form of education instituted at the early-childhood level. By play-learning with peers, social development happens more readily. Additionally, emotional growth is heightened in a child-centered atmosphere where self-confidence and emotional expression are encouraged.

Teachers in a child-centered classroom act as “facilitators.” They assist students in learning without providing direct instruction. The teacher’s ultimate role is to help provide structure and order within the class while allowing each student to explore his or her own potential.

Child-Centered Teaching

Just as teaching is different in a child-centered educational format, so too is the structure of a classroom. In order to facilitate all students’ skills and interests, educators may distribute students differently. For example, some child-centered schools divide students into “learning communities” and/or use multi-age groupings. More elective choices are also made available in such settings.
Additionally, assessment methods must be tailored to student projects. This requires the use of flexible rubrics and other informal, adaptable testing methods.Effectiveness of Child-Centered Education
The 1997 High-Scope Preschool Curriculum Comparison Study, the 1983 Louisville Head Start Study, and the 1983 University of Illinois Study have indicated that child-centered learning during early childhood produces greater long-term results than traditional programs. These studies also show that child-centered learning produces significant social and emotional developments.
When what is being taught is relevant to the student, he or she is more likely to retain information and participate in the learning experience. Thus, child-centered education has the potential to reach more learners and teach students more effectively.
Additionally, the ever-changing role of the teacher makes his or her job more dynamic and interesting. This encourages continued professional growth. Ultimately, such educational models are ideal both for young children and even older students and will likely become more popular as schools continue to look at ways to close the achievement gap.

Teacher training program on CCCM in Oman

Seward Inc. Awarded Teacher Training Project in Oman

Project focuses on the application of child-centered classroom methods at Sultan Qaboos University

Minneapolis, Minnesota, February 9, 2009 - Seward Incorporated has been awarded a contract with Creative Associates International, Inc. to institutionalize the Child Centered Classroom Methodology (CCCM) at various Ministry of Higher Education’s (MOHE) pre-service training institutions in Oman. The contract is funded by the US Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). Creative and Seward will partner with Sultan Qaboos University to create a complete, self-contained CCCM training program that is based on a fully developed and locally accepted curriculum. The program will be developed in close collaboration with the MEPI-funded CCCM in-service training program at the Ministry of Education (MOE).
The training will build on several years of CCCM work undertaken by Creative Associates in partnership with the Ministry of Education as part of earlier MEPI projects. The goal of the new pre-service training activity is to educate new teacher education students enrolled in SQU, and ultimately all teacher training programs in Oman, on CCCM. The training will provide teacher candidates with the skills they need to apply CCCM in classroom settings as they become teachers.
Seward will design the CCCM training so it can be easily integrated into Oman's teacher education system. A gradual transfer of full responsibility for the CCCM program to SQU faculty will take place over the life of the MEPI-funded project.

Oman Child Centered Classroom Methodology (CCCM)

Work With Sultan Qaboos University Faculty to Promote CCCM

The Sultanate of Oman’s education ministry has committed to raising education standards to a level which will enable Oman’s children to perform more effectively in schools and – eventually – in the marketplace. CCCM enables students to direct their own learning, a critical capability in an ever changing technology-based world.
CCCM is widely regarded as a successful example of how to improve education quality and prepare students from first to fourth grades to be self-directed in their educational development. The Oman Ministry of Education is working with Seward International as part of the Creative Associates team to scale up and institutionalize CCCM practices in schools and teacher training institutions.
Seward has
  • Worked with the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) English Education faculty to develop the 11-lesson course.
  • Deliver training to SQU English Education faculty to orient them to and prepare them to use the new CCCM focused course design.
  • Team teach and mentor faculty as they begin teaching using the new curriculum materials.

Seward Inc. Works with Clients to Design and Deliver Courses Using Moodle
Over the past two years, Seward Inc. has worked with clients to design and deliver training courses using Moodle, an open source learning management system. With over 50,000 installations in 207 countries, Moodle is quickly gaining the attention of educators around the globe.

Seward has used Moodle’s highly flexible nature to fit these clients’ course delivery needs:
  • Omani Pre-Service Teacher Training Project in Child-Centered Classroom Methodologies (CCCM): In collaboration with instructors from Sultan Qaboos University’s College of Education, Seward redesigned a college course for pre-service teachers on CCCM. In designing the new hybrid course, Seward used Moodle’s interactive and social capabilities to give the pre-service teachers personal experience in the methods they would be using in their own classrooms, such as active learning and collaborative small group work.
